Rosie

Meet one of the most amazing little Chihuahua-mixes ever, ROSIE. A Leg Up Rescue heard about her and knew instantly that she needed us and that we could give her the life she deserved. Bought from a back-yard breeder, her owners were disappointed when she was not a tea-cup chihuahaua and so the puppy was banished to the small bathroom. She was left alone for days at a time. And if this were not bad enough, one night the owner's boyfriend hit Rosie for barking. He hit her hard and yet no one took her in for treatment. And she suffered for months. Finally a family member took Rosie out of this cruel and lonely situation and that's when she came to ALUR.
Rosie spent her first weeks outside each and every day. She basked in the sun and rolled in the grass and relished her daily walks. And Rosie quickly caught up with cuddle time. She adores the attention of her foster mother and quickly seeks out loving pats from others.
ALUR in the meantime provided Rosie with the medical care she needed. She had her damaged eye removed; her remaining eye has a chronic condition that requires drips. Rosie is nearly 100% blind but can see light and dark. She gets around her home very well and enjoys the dog park! She is also good on the leash but prefers to walk slowly and to savor her walk. Off leash walks are a lot of fun with Rosie.
Rosie will be one yr. old the end of January! She is 17lbs. And she is ready to start the new year with her forever family. As Rosie has special needs, her forever home should be ready to be patient as she adapts to her new home.

Holly

It's finally her turn. This sweet little girl has found her forever home.

Sweet little Holly has been waiting oh-so-long for a permanent home. She is wondering when it will be her turn? Holly was rescued from the shelter when one of our volunteers - on a mission to rescue other dogs - saw her at the shelter. Our volunteer was unaware of Holly's shelter stay until that fate filled day. Lucky for Holly, ALUR's astute volunteer saw her and took her along for the ride that saved her life! Holly is about 8-10 years old but don't let that discourage you! She is in GREAT health (believe us, we've spared no expense to make sure of that) and is a spry little nugget. Although she only weighs about 5 pounds, she has no trouble trying to mix it up with her younger and much bigger foster siblings. The resident dogs at her foster home are twice her size, but she never misses an opportunity to bark at them when they start wrestling around the room and causing too big of a ruckus! It's very cute to watch her try to gain control of the room. Nothing would please Holly more than to be in a home with dogs who are less rambunctious! She would love to sit on your lap (at home or at work) and be a part of your life. She gets along fine with other small dogs, but doesn't need another dog; she's pretty easy going either way. Please consider adopting OR fostering Holly. She would love the chance to be pampered! (photo courtesy of Doug at justshootmedoug@gmail.com)

Maia

Maia is a very petite, lovable little charmer. Topping the scales at 4 lbs., she is a gorgeous chocolate brown color. Rescued from the shelter, Maia has adjusted very quickly to her foster home, which she shares with several Chi mixes and a cat. Maia gets along well with all of them, and they seem to like her too! She is an easy-going, alert little love bug who would love to be a valued member of your household. She has a good appetite, and we are fine-tuning her leash and potty training. Please share this post; If you would like to meet Maia, just give Carrie Isett, foster mom, a woof or contact through A Leg Up Rescue! More about little Maia as we get to know her!

Capio

Meet Capio, the most charming well-mannered Chihuahua who is waiting for his forever home. This little guy is 10 yrs old yet he is a spry one. Capio has gone on hikes and never once does he slow down as he tackles the hills of Pulgas Ridge. And Capio happily plays with other dogs. He even tired out the puppy! Capio loves going with his foster to The City for cafe dining and shopping! Capio walks great off-leash and on-leash. He hardly ever barks and he is doing great with his potty training..I say he is 90% there. Capio gets along great with small dogs and medium dogs and even likes the resident cat. He has been friendly with all people, including children. Due to his small size and his age, children must be mature and know how to be gentle with a loving senior. Capio is approximately 7lbs. He is neutered, UTD on vaccines, microchiped and just had a dental. While Capio gets along with other dogs and can easily join an existing pack, he's also happy to just be an only dog. He goes either way :) If you are interested in meeting this little nugget, please fill out an application and we can arrange a meet-n-greet.

He's very energetic and just loves the dog park. He gets along well with other dogs and cats, he loves chew toys and playing. He has a very good appetite and would love a home where his human could take him out for a run or daily exercise.

He is available through ALUR and ready to go. He has all his shots, microchip and is neutered.

Tiki

Queen LaTeacup, or "Tiki" for short, is a beautiful cream and caramel longhaired Chihuahua, weighing in at just under 4 lbs. The shelter vet put her at about 1 years old. Interesting thing is she only has 2 teeth but that does stop her from eating! She was just spayed and is up-to-date on her vaccinations. She came in as a stray to the Palo Alto shelter. She is soooo very sweet, so elegant, and surprisingly not fearful despite her diminutive size. She seems to like most people, kids, other dogs, she hasn’t barked much so far, and she warmed up to me and everyone else she’s met immediately! She’s potty trained (goes on wee pads and outside), walks great on leash (in fact, I think she’d rather walk than be carried) and is fine on stairs. She loves to cuddle in your lap, but if you’ve got work to do, she’s fine hanging out on her own. Her foster mom lives on one of the busiest streets in SF and none of the noises seem to phase her. She would be the perfect dog to take to work with you and a great size if you travel a lot! She is available now from A Leg Up Rescue www.aleguprescue.org.

Cookie

Hi, my name is Cookie. For most of my life (about one and a half years) I've only known to live in a really large group of chihuahuas. I must have been on the bottom of the pecking order, because I tend to be submissive. But in my new foster home, everything is calm and I have really opened up. I love to play with Seymore my foster brother and I love to get hugs and cuddles from my human foster mom. I eat really well. I think I gained 1 pound over the last week. I was really skinny, I must have looked like Twiggy. I go out on walks and don't mind being leash walked. I love my sweater that my foster mom puts on me, otherwise I wouldn't like to walk because I would be freezing in the SF cold. I still need you to make sure to take me out so I learn how to pee and poop outside. I think in my first home I was trained to use a wee wee pad. I am sure I can become a real outgoing dog, but I need some time and a quiet environment where I can feel safe and loved.
Please see our other available dogs at A Leg Up Rescue such as BiBi or Brandi. A Leg Up Rescue must charge an adoption fee which is $200.

If you are interested in adopting, please complete our online adoption application, or please email aLegUprescue@me.com.

Zoey is a one year small male Chihuahua that ended up in a shelter (as he was found on the streets as a stray). He is a very sweet little 3 1/2 pound boy and he gets along with cats & dogs. He has the most beautiful markings (red face with freckles and a brown and white body). He needs to gain a little weight as he is thin and he will be available soon after his neuter. If you would like to fill out an application for Zoey please e-mail staceyca@gmail.com
No small children or large dogs please. You must live in Southern CA as we do not adopt out of the area.

Henry

Henry is a cute, super sweet little 1 yr. old male Chi who has been through a lot in his short life. He and two other puppies were abandoned at a construction site and ended up in the shelter. From his ordeal of being left outside, flies bit his ears raw, but the hair has begun growing back in and they look better each day.

Henry is one of the sweetest dogs on the planet. He plays with all his foster brothers and sisters, and also plays with toys. But to Henry, the best place to be is in your arms, on his back, eyes closed, tongue hanging out. He is a real charmer. When he wants your attention, he sits up in a begging position and just stays there, perfectly still, until you either pick him up or he falls over. He has even been observed doing this with the puppies in his foster pack! It is so funny and sweet. He hasn't been any problem of any type in his foster home. He is fine on a leash. He loves to go on adventures in the car. He is a little shy initially, but has really learned to trust the people he is with since his traumatic beginning in that construction site. Henry will be a wonderful, cuddly, loving addition to your home. Take a chance on Henry!!

Mr. Pickles

Meet Mr. Pickles! He is also known as Mr. Personality! He enjoys shopping, at stores large and small, and a crowd gathers wherever he goes. Who can resist a 4 lb., one year old, long-haired Chihuahua? And this guy is more than just handsome. He's affectionate with his people and bonds quickly. Mr. Pickles can convince the most reticent dog to play with him - and play hard. When he sees something he wants, for instance a new dog to meet and entice into play, he dances on hind legs. In addition to all that good stuff, he's a fast learner and reads people and animals really well. He likes small dogs and even gets along with cats, including those much larger than himself. It's easy to groom Mr. P. - he doesn't seem to mind people's poking around in his ears and mouth or messing with his feet. However, when water is involved he might decide it's time to go outside and play. He's very good on car rides, is house trained, neutered, up to date on vaccinations (as of October 2011), is learning wait and stay, and he barks only to protect his home and people. Mr. Pickles should go to a home where there is at least one other small dog in residence. Because of his small size, only mature children are recommended.

Sara is a 5 lb, petite Chihuahua who is very sweet and also shy. Sara and two other dogs were abandoned on a construction site and ended up in the shelter. (Don't worry, we got them all out!) Although she is very shy at first, and it may take her several days to get used to her new home, she loves to sit on your lap. She is fine on leash, though still getting used to the big world, loud noises still startle her a bit. She is crate trained and rides well in the car. She gets along well with other small dogs and may be okay with cats. Sara is under two years old and will be a wonderful addition to any household. If you are interested, please fill out the application.
