Little Man

Little Man is in the foreground of this picture. He is littermate to Miss Bulger and Daisy Mae - all born on August 8th. He is a long haired black and tan Dachshund and the sweetest puppy! He loves for people to hold him and to be affectionate, and wants nothing more than to cuddle. He gets very bonded to people and cries when he wants to be picked up. While this is an adorable characteristic, he needs a home where someone can help him feel safe and secure when he is not being held, too, so that he doesn't develop separation anxiety. We can help you work with the right trainer so that Little Man can be comfortable without feeling neglected. That being said, we believe he would like to have a home with someone who wants a very bonded and affectionate dog. He wants to be someone's constant companion. He is good with other dogs and would probably enjoy a dog companion who isn't too bossy. He's a total sweetie pie. If you are interested in Little Man, please fill out the adoption application posted to this site.

Buster

Buster is a tiny dog with what appears to be a "big" personality. He loves people and is happy to meet kids, but we do not recommend that he live in a home with kids unless the adults have a lot of small dog experience. He only weighs four pounds, but he bonds well to children and also really likes men. While in his foster home we have discovered that he likes to sit with the little girl. BUT, when the mother approaches he will growl and act very fearful. Our trainer does not believe he is acting aggressively (even though that's the first thought that goes through your head), but that he is truly afraid of what is going to happen next. The foster family has been working with him using positive reinforcement training techniques, and while he is making headway, we do not recommend an adoptive home that already has young children. He would be fine in a family with older kids, or with a couple who have children who visit. Aside from that, there is nothing but wonderful things to say about Buster. He is playful, sweet, LOVES to eat, and when he plays he often finds a stuffed animal that is at least twice his size to drag across the floor. He will carry the stuffed animal into bed and then suck on it like a baby would nuzzle a blanket - it's really cute! If you are interested in Buster, with that tiny little quirk and all, please fill out the adoption application on the site. He's really a sweet, loving little dog!

Ruby

While it might be hard to see how adorable Ruby looks in pictures, one thing that isn't hard to mistake is her amazing personality. She has been a pleasure for her foster care providers who report that Ruby is nice to everyone. Going on a walk, hanging out at the house - you name it and Ruby is game! She weighs about 10 pounds and is less than 2 years old. One funny thing happened during her first week in foster care - she set off the house alarm! She is learning that it's not okay to jump on the coffee table, but before she knew better she triggered the motion detector and the alarm company notified the police! Good thing Ruby didn't break a door to enter the property or the police might not have been so forgiving. So, a few house manners are in order, but Ruby would make a great little companion for someone who is home often or can take a dog to work. She's definitely an indoor dog with a love for the outdoors. If you are interested in Ruby, please consider filling out the application on this site.

Sky

Sky is an adorable and young little Chihuahua who is just yearning to be your companion. We don't know what circumstances led her to being discarded and then end up at the shelter, but we DO know she arrived with a dry, ugly coat! Her wonderful foster parents have turned this little girl into quite the diamond! Her coat is now glossy and soft, and her happiness even shows in her eyes! Sky loves to be with other small dogs, but this is not a necessary requirement for her adoption - she is really comfortable in either situation (with or without companion dogs). If you are interested in adopting petite little Sky, please fill out the application, or email Jenn@aLegUpRescue.org for more information about her.

Papi's Back

Update: Papi was adopted and through no fault of his own, his home did not work out. He was settled in and enjoying his new family when the partners decided to split up. Neither could commit to providing him with a good home, so they returned him to A Leg Up. Once a dog becomes a part of the A Leg Up family, we promise to be there for him no matter what. So, now we are back to searching for the perfect home for Papi. He is more than ready to settle into your heart, but please make sure you are ready for the commitment.

January Update: Thankfully, Papi's story ends well - he has made a wonderful recovery and is feeling great. However, there is one final chapter left to be written. Papi still needs an adoptive home. If you feel you can help bring a truly happy ending to this story by adopting Papi, please consider filling out the adoption application. Living with a blind dog is not as difficult as it might sound at first. We are more than happy to help you through the transition while you and Papi get used to the new arrangements. He's a great little companion, so loving and sweet, and we're sure the right person is out there just waiting to be united with him.

Update: We are pleased to report Papi had surgery and is doing great! His latest follow up visit to the veterinarian was a success, and it is very apparent to his foster care provider that Papi is feeling much better without his painful eyes. The glaucoma was causing pain in his head, but now that the constance source of pain has been eliminated, Papi's delightful personality is able to shine through. He has made a wonderful recovery and a fabulous transformation. Papi is ready to start his life with an adoptive family. If you are interested in learning more about living with a blind dog, please check the resources on the following sites:
http://www.blinddogs.com/tips.htm
http://www.eyevet.info/blind.html
http://www.blinddogs.net/
Or email info@aLegUpRescue.org for more information. We are determined to help his adopter/s have the resources necessary to provide Papi with a delightful life.

Previous Update: With your generous support, we have raised the money necessary to fund Papi's surgery. He is scheduled for Thursday, November 28th, and we are all going to be eagerly awaiting the positive results. We will continue to update his friends and supporters as information is available. Please consider sharing his story - there's nothing he'd like more this holiday season than to find his forever home.

His Story: A Leg Up Rescue regularly receives calls about special needs animals at shelters. PAPI IS OUR LATEST CASE. Papi's eyes are causing him pain. He was given up by his family who couldn't afford his costly glaucoma treatments. Sadly, they waited too long to give him to the shelter, so now his eyes are diseased. We tried medication, but the pressure is too great. Papi's head hurts and now his eyes must be removed.

We have a team of expert vets ready to assist, but we need your support. Papi can lead a normal, pain-free life after surgery. You can see from the picture, he is adventurous and wants to do things that other dogs can do - here he is pictured on the beach with his foster care provider. Papi's surgery will cost approximately $600. It's a small price to pay to relieve the pain he is now forced to endure.
Once Papi's surgery is complete, he'll be looking for a loving adoptive family to share the holidays with. Papi won't be able to see the yummy holiday treats on the table, but he will certainly be able to smell them!

Won't you please consider making a donation toward his care, or sharing his story with friends?

Dolly Update

We can't understand why Delicious Dolly is still in foster care? She is adorable in person, full of spirit, and a sweet little companion. She is anxious to meet her new guardian - might it be you? If we can answer any further questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to ask.
***
Dolly is a sweet little girl with lots of personality. She loves her toys – really loves them. Truth be told, she loves to get the squeaker out of them! She leaps around with a new toy, then hops (literally hops) into her bed with it and tries to de-squeak it! While Dolly does everything with gusto, if you pick her up she's immediately half asleep and content in your arms or lap. And at bed time Dolly will get into her bed and snuggle under the covers – it’s so cute to see. Dolly only weighs about 12 pounds and loves to go for walks. She has a sense of adventure, and is a very funny girl who will try her best to put a smile on your face. She does have a touch of separation anxiety (no doubt from past experiences) but this is getting better. From her foster care provider’s experience, she is NOT destructive when left alone, but she does let out a few barks to let you know she’s not thrilled about being left behind. Now that she’s getting a taste of the good life, why would she want anything but to be with her foster mom?! We think her past was a rough one and now she just wants to spend her future making up for lost time. She loves being a house dog, loves the companionship that comes from a loving family, and will make someone a wonderful little companion. To request more information about Dolly or to adopt, please email info@aLegUpRescue.org.
